Order ID Number

Could anyone tell me where the Order ID number comes from?

I ask, as between orders that appear in my list there are jumps of various sizes between orders, and I'm just worried that I'm losing orders (or customers) somewhere along the line...

Any suggestions/answers would be a great help and hopefully put my mind at rest!

always when some user add something to basket next order id is created, but if he don't send order that id is unusefull, that is why
